Bunny (Mona Awad) - I could not finish this book
I read this book till midway and DNFed it (Did Not Finish). So my review is reflective of my partial read only.
Bunny is about the warped and messed up lives of literature students in a much sought after college in New England that, as we understand from the book, is difficult to get into, and from a partial reading of the book, seems difficult to get out of too. Samantha is trying to fit into the crowd, where she feels like an outsider. The others in her class, in a particular course she is taking, are all of 4 students, all girls who seem to come from generational wealth, look and speak practically the same way and call each other Bunny (they have names but this is how the clique works - if you get called Bunny by them, you have arrived). The book starts with Samantha the outsider and miserable - she has one friend called Ava who she hangs with most often. There is some history and sexual tension with a Professor who is called the Lion and then whole lot of issues Samantha is facing with a writer's block etc. She has come to this college with the hope that she will make something of herself. After a few chapters, she is surprised to find some semblance of acceptance from the Bunnies group and becomes part of their rituals and creative processes which are very cultish and violent and scary. They are all high on substances, no one knows what is real and what is imagined and things just get from bad to worse. It is here that i lost interest in the repetitive nature of the plot and the literary devices used.
Are all the girls experiencing a collective hallucination or trauma? Or are they really doing the killing and is it some sort of witch craft? I get that it is a flawed narrator and I cannot take things to be as they are stated but I do need the plot to progress and not stay constant for 140 pages.
The writing is also repetitive and goes round in circles. The best friend seems to be conjured up and not real, but then how many things are being imagined here? I could not find any anchor to the story and I DNFed it.
